Employment The Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center is a public nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Alabama and incorporated in 1967. The Center operates under a thirty-member board of directors, each of whom resides in the area he represents in the regional area served by the Center. Board members are appointed by the local governing entities in Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker and Winston Counties. The Board of Directors meets monthly and as needed to establish policies and respond to matters of business presented for consideration. The executive director is then charged with implementing the adopted policies. The Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center was first certified by the Alabama Department of Mental Health as meeting minimum standards in February 1971. The Center provides services to persons with diagnoses of mental illness, mental retardation, or substance abuse problems. Clinician/administrators, each with a number of years experience, supervise the Mental Retardation Services, Mental Illness and Substance Abuse Services for the five-county area.
