Summer Fun Program

The Summer Fun Program is designed to provide recreation and leisure activities for children and youth with developmental disabilities who live in Fayette and Lamar counties. The program will be limited to fifteen participants who are served on a first come, first served basis. The main objective of the program is that the participants have opportunities that are fun during the summer, which is often a time of void for children and youth with developmental disabilities.

The goals of the program include providing opportunities for:

  • Learning new leisure time skills or recreational activities that can be used in daily life.
  • Acquiring a positive self-image.
  • Becoming familiar with recreational, cultural, and educational resources in the community.
  • Increasing receptive and expressive language skills.
  • Learning how to order in a restaurant, both fast food and more structured restaurants.
  • Leaning the importance of good grooming and personal hygiene.
  • Learning to make choices when given two or more options for leisure activities.

The Summer Fun Program is funded through donations from local residents, businesses, and churches; some contributors include the Alabama Power Company; Cannon Foundation of Fayette; First United Methodist Church; Senator Roger Bedford; Representative William Thigpen; Probate Judge William Oswalt; and Former Governor Don Siegleman.
